Pete Buttigieg spent much of his early adulthood believing love was something he could postpone. Chasten Glezman spent his believing that being fully known might cost him the people and places he loved. They found one another during the summer when marriage equality became the law of the land, then built a marriage that would carry them from an Indiana riverwalk to a presidential campaign, the Cabinet, parenthood, and a place in American LGBTQ+ history.
On June 16, 2018, Pete Buttigieg and Chasten Glezman sat beside one another inside the Episcopal Cathedral of St. James in South Bend, Indiana. Pete was the city’s mayor, accustomed to council meetings, public ceremonies, and rooms in which people waited for him to speak. That afternoon, however, he struggled to get the words of his wedding vow past the emotion rising in his throat.
Their marriage was legal in every state, but it was not yet ordinary in the eyes of every American or every church. The Supreme Court had recognized a constitutional right to same-sex marriage only three years earlier. The Episcopal Diocese of Northern Indiana had permitted its churches to celebrate same-sex marriages only in December 2016, making Pete and Chasten the third gay couple married at the cathedral.
Security at the doors was unusually strict because one groom was the mayor and both were men. Reporters were kept outside, although the service was livestreamed for anyone who wished to witness it. Inside, approximately two hundred guests watched them make the same promises generations of couples had made, with one extraordinary difference: most of those earlier generations had never imagined two men would be permitted to speak those vows to one another in a church.
Among the readings they selected were words from Justice Anthony Kennedy’s majority opinion in Obergefell v. Hodges, the decision that had made their marriage possible. Their wedding therefore joined private devotion to public history, but it did not belong only to the history books. It belonged to two men who had once wondered separately whether a life like this would ever belong to them.
Before They Found Each Other
Pete and Chasten reached that cathedral by very different roads. Both grew up in the Midwest, but each learned early that being gay could complicate one’s relationship with family, faith, community, ambition, and the future.
Chasten grew up near Traverse City, Michigan, in a close working-class family. He loved theater and teaching, but felt different from his father and brothers in a community where masculinity came with expectations he could not comfortably inhabit.
He came out to his family at eighteen and left home soon afterward, convinced he had disappointed the people he loved. For a period, he stayed with friends and sometimes slept in his car. His parents loved him and the family eventually healed, but fear had already taught Chasten how quickly honesty could make a young gay person feel homeless, unwanted, or alone.
Pete followed a more guarded path. He attended Harvard, studied at Oxford, entered politics, served in the Navy Reserve, deployed to Afghanistan, and became mayor of South Bend without publicly acknowledging that he was gay.
He did not speak about his identity because he believed privacy protected both his career and the orderly life he had constructed. Yet privacy had become something more than discretion. It had become a place where the possibility of love was continually postponed.
His deployment changed the calculation. Traveling through a war zone reminded him that life could end before he had begun living it honestly, and he returned to South Bend understanding that achievement could not substitute for intimacy.
On June 16, 2015, Pete came out in an essay published by the South Bend Tribune. He was thirty-three, seeking reelection in a socially conservative state, and placing both his public future and his private truth before the voters.
Ten days later, the Supreme Court issued its decision in Obergefell. Pete had made himself visible at almost the precise moment the law began recognizing that gay people could build the marriages and families he had once feared might remain beyond his reach. He still had not met the man with whom he would build one.
A Mayor on a Dating App
Pete and Chasten connected through Hinge during the summer of 2015. Chasten was studying in Chicago, while Pete lived about ninety miles away in South Bend and faced the peculiar challenge of trying to date in a city where he was the mayor.
They began with messages, jokes, and conversations about Game of Thrones. Those exchanges became FaceTime calls, allowing each man to study the person behind the profile before deciding whether to meet.
Chasten eventually suggested getting together while driving from Chicago to visit a friend in Michigan. They planned to meet for coffee, but traffic delayed him and transformed the schedule. Pete, who had reportedly spent the day giddy enough for his staff to notice, made room for dinner instead.
When Chasten pulled up outside Pete’s house, both men greeted each other with “Howdy” at exactly the same moment. The awkwardness broke, and the date expanded from dinner at Fiddler’s Hearth, where Pete introduced Chasten to Scotch eggs, into a South Bend Cubs game and a walk beside the St. Joseph River.
Pete was approached by constituents during the evening. Chasten hovered nearby, unsure how the recently out mayor would describe the unfamiliar man who had arrived through a dating app.
At the ballpark, Pete paid for Chasten’s drink in full view of the bartender. The gesture was small, but Chasten understood what it meant. Pete was not pretending to be alone, and he was not treating their date as something shameful that had to disappear whenever another person looked in their direction.
The First Touch
As they walked beside the river beneath South Bend’s nighttime light display, their hands brushed. Pete reached for Chasten’s hand and later described the moment in Shortest Way Home:
“Nothing in my life . . . matched the thrill of holding Chasten’s hand for the first time.”
Pete had shaken a president’s hand and survived a rocket attack in Afghanistan, but neither experience equaled this quiet contact. The comparison reveals how completely he had separated achievement from emotional risk.
Holding Chasten’s hand required no resume, public argument, or carefully prepared answer. It required Pete to be present as one man wanting another, without retreating behind the competence that had protected him for years.
For many heterosexual couples, holding hands on a riverwalk would barely register as an act requiring courage. For Pete, newly out and publicly recognizable, it joined tenderness to visibility. The touch said that he was no longer willing to accept a life in which love could exist only beyond the sight of others.
The walk ended beneath fireworks from the ballpark, and Chasten kissed him near the car. What could sound overly perfect in fiction happened on their first date, yet its significance was not in the cinematic setting. It was in the sense of safety each man had begun giving the other.
Pete discovered that intimacy did not have to threaten the life he had built. Chasten discovered that the mayor beside him was not ashamed to be seen.
Learning the Ordinary Parts
The first date did not erase Chasten’s doubts. He had been hurt before, distrusted politicians, and wondered whether Pete’s attention was genuine or simply another practiced form of charm.
They kept talking anyway. Chasten began spending long weekends in South Bend and eventually joined Pete for Sunday dinners with Pete’s parents, Anne and Joe. Less than six months after the relationship began, he moved into Pete’s home.
Their lives combined through small decisions rather than a single grand declaration. Chasten pursued teaching and graduate work, while Pete managed the demands of City Hall. They adopted dogs, negotiated chores, learned each other’s habits, and discovered that compatibility is often measured through groceries, laundry, sleep, and who remembers to take the trash to the curb.
The ordinary quality of their home life would later become part of their historical importance. People accustomed to hearing same-sex relationships described as political controversies saw two men arguing about folded T-shirts, caring for rescue dogs, and trying to find time for dinner.
Their normalcy was not a performance intended to prove that gay couples deserved acceptance. It was simply the truth that prejudice had spent generations obscuring. They loved, annoyed, supported, and depended upon one another in ways familiar to anyone who has attempted to build a life with another person.
Seven Terrible Minutes
The relationship deepened during a frightening episode involving Chasten’s flight to Europe. Shortly after takeoff, a problem aboard the plane left him fearing that he might not survive. He sent Pete a message saying something was wrong and that he loved him.
Pete received the message at home and endured what he later remembered as seven minutes in which he doubted he would ever see Chasten again. Chasten, meanwhile, decided during the crisis that if the plane landed safely and he reached Pete, he would propose.
The danger passed, but the clarity remained. Love had become more than the happiness of being together. It had become the terror of imagining that their unfinished life could be taken away.
Both men began moving toward marriage. Neither initially knew that the other was making plans of his own.
Gate B5
In December 2017, Pete brought Chasten to Gate B5 at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. It was the place where Chasten had first noticed Pete’s profile while waiting for a flight, making an unromantic airport gate part of their private geography.
Pete had studied the schedule to find a time when the gate would be empty. Behind the gate agent’s desk, inside a narrow space pressed against the window, he asked Chasten to marry him.
Pete announced their engagement publicly on December 14:
“He said yes! Can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with Chasten Glezman.”
The message is joyful because it is so direct. Pete does not qualify the announcement, explain why two men should be permitted to marry, or ask the public to approve. He speaks with the uncomplicated happiness of someone whose future has suddenly become real.
The phrase “the rest of my life” carried particular meaning for a man who had spent years behaving as though love could wait. Pete was no longer arranging his life around what might be politically safest. He was arranging it around another person.
The airport also suited the relationship they were choosing. Life with Pete would involve schedules, departures, interrupted dinners, public events, and constant motion. Chasten was not merely accepting a proposal. He was consenting to an adventure whose destination neither man could yet see.
The Church Door Opens
Marriage equality under civil law did not guarantee that Pete and Chasten could marry within their own church. The Episcopal Church was moving toward greater inclusion, but dioceses differed in whether they permitted same-sex wedding rites.
The Diocese of Northern Indiana had prohibited those ceremonies until Bishop Douglas Sparks adopted a more permissive policy in December 2016. That change allowed congregations such as the Cathedral of St. James to decide that same-sex couples could marry within their walls.
Pete and Chasten wanted their marriage rooted in the faith community they considered home. They did not wish to travel elsewhere simply because another congregation might be more welcoming.
Their wedding therefore reflected progress at three levels. The country had recognized their civil right to marry, the diocese had opened its churches to their union, and their local congregation stood ready to celebrate them.
The Very Rev. Brian Grantz preached that love lives in the space between people. He described the couple’s life together as a window through which others might glimpse hope, then told Pete and Chasten that they were beloved by God and made for one another.
The words answered a lifetime of religious messages telling LGBTQ+ people that their love placed them outside divine approval. In that cathedral, faith was not used to tolerate the grooms despite their relationship. It was used to bless the relationship itself.
June 16
The date carried a symmetry neither man could have planned at the beginning. Pete married Chasten exactly three years after publicly coming out.
In 2015, June 16 had been the day Pete told his city that he was gay, uncertain what the admission might cost him. In 2018, it became the day he stood before that same city and promised his life to the man he loved.
After the service, the newly married couple stopped at a South Bend Pride block party. Their appearance turned a private wedding day into a moment shared with the community whose struggle had made the wedding possible.
Their reception was held at LangLab, an arts space inside a former industrial building. Two years later, Pete would return to the same room to address the Democratic National Convention and speak about how quickly the impossible can become real.
The wedding was not proof that equality had been completed. It was proof that years of organizing, court battles, changed hearts, and personal courage could alter what two men were allowed to imagine for themselves.
A Marriage Enters a Presidential Campaign
Less than a year after the wedding, Pete formally entered the 2020 presidential campaign. Chasten had married the mayor of South Bend, but suddenly found himself traveling the country beside a man asking voters to make him the first openly gay president.
Their marriage became visible at a scale neither had experienced. Supporters saw Pete kiss Chasten on campaign stages, speak about his husband during debates, and present same-sex marriage as part of an ordinary American life. LGBTQ+ young people saw a candidate seeking the highest office in the country with his husband beside him.
The visibility came with a price. Chasten left his classroom, endured long separations from Pete, and faced homophobic attacks directed at their marriage. Public figures questioned whether voters could accept a male candidate kissing his husband, treating a normal gesture of affection as a test of national tolerance.
Pete’s identity also did not free the campaign from legitimate political scrutiny. Voters debated his experience, policies, record in South Bend, and ability to build a broad coalition. Equality did not require anyone to support his candidacy simply because he was gay.
The historical distinction was that Pete could be evaluated as a serious candidate without concealing his husband. When he won the most pledged delegates in the Iowa caucuses, an openly gay man had won a presidential nominating contest with the person he loved standing at his side.
What Love Restored
Pete suspended his campaign on March 1, 2020, returning to South Bend to address supporters. Chasten introduced him and described the personal reason he had encouraged his husband to run:
“After falling in love with Pete, Pete got me to believe in myself again.”
The sentence reveals that love did more than make Chasten happy. It helped repair something fear, shame, rejection, and earlier hurt had damaged.
Pete did not create Chasten’s worth, and Chasten’s life cannot be reduced to the role of a politician’s husband. Love instead gave him a relationship in which worth could be reflected back until he was able to recognize it for himself.
Chasten had once left home believing his truth might cost him belonging. Years later, he stood before a national audience and described a marriage that had restored his confidence, then used that confidence to tell other young people they belonged as well.
That is one of love’s quiet powers. It cannot erase the past, but it can give a wounded person enough safety to imagine that the past does not have to dictate the future.
Beyond the Campaign
Pete’s presidential campaign ended, but the history surrounding their marriage continued. In February 2021, the United States Senate confirmed him as secretary of transportation, making him the first openly gay person confirmed by the Senate to a Cabinet position.
Chasten stood beside Pete during his ceremonial swearing-in with Vice President Kamala Harris. The scene was historically significant, yet its emotional center was uncomplicated. A husband watched the man he loved take an oath of public service.
The demands of federal office again required them to negotiate distance, travel, and time. Their relationship had become practiced in departures, but public achievement did not eliminate the need to protect a private life.
They were also attempting to become parents. The adoption process brought several false starts in which a call raised the possibility that a child might be coming, only for the opportunity to disappear.
Each reversal required them to grieve a family they had briefly imagined. They kept going because the desire Chasten had mentioned on their first date remained central to the future they wanted.
Two Dads
In August 2021, Pete and Chasten became parents to premature twins, Penelope Rose and Joseph August, whom they call Gus. They entered a hospital room uncertain of what to do until a nurse addressed them as dads and told them they could hold their children.
The first weeks brought bottles, swaddling, divided night shifts, and the stunned exhaustion of new parenthood. They traded vehicles for a minivan large enough to carry two fathers, two babies, and two dogs between Michigan and Washington.
Then both twins contracted respiratory syncytial virus. Penelope required hospital care, while Gus became critically ill, was intubated, and was transferred to a children’s hospital during dangerous weather.
Pete and Chasten took turns caring for Penelope, remaining beside Gus, sleeping near the hospital, and reassuring each other through fear. Political title and public visibility offered no protection from the terror of watching their infant son connected to a ventilator.
Gus recovered. The experience left both men with a deeper understanding of vulnerability, caregiving, and the ways love can make another person’s survival feel inseparable from one’s own.
Their family also became a visible answer to those who depict same-sex parents as abstractions in a cultural argument. Pete and Chasten were not symbols when they warmed bottles at three in the morning, changed diapers, or held each other outside a hospital room. They were fathers trying to bring their children home.
The Cost of Remaining Visible
Public acceptance has never moved in a straight line. The marriage equality that made Pete and Chasten’s wedding possible remains part of a broader political struggle over LGBTQ+ families, schools, books, health care, and legal recognition.
Their family has continued to attract hostility because it is both ordinary and visible. In June 2026, an anonymous false report brought police and child protective services to their Michigan home and temporarily separated Pete from the twins while authorities completed required interviews.
Michigan State Police later confirmed that the allegation was false. Pete described the twenty-four hours before the children returned as among the darkest of his life and condemned the decision to use children as instruments of political harassment.
The incident revealed an unsettling truth about visibility. Representation can help millions of people feel less alone, but it can also give hateful people a target. Pete and Chasten have continued to show their family publicly because surrendering that visibility would allow hostility to define whose families are permitted to be seen.
Endurance does not mean pretending an attack caused no harm. It means refusing to let the person who caused it decide what love, family, or public service will look like afterward.
A Living Historical Love Story
Historical love stories are often told after the people within them are gone. Their letters have been opened, their choices interpreted, and their ending fixed beyond revision.
Pete and Chasten Buttigieg are still writing theirs. As of September 2026, they have been married for eight years and live in northern Michigan with Gus, Penelope, and their dogs. Pete completed four years as secretary of transportation in January 2025, while Chasten continues his work as an author, teacher, and advocate.
Their story belongs to history not because it has concluded, but because their marriage became visible at several turning points in American life. They met immediately after nationwide marriage equality, married in a church that had only recently opened its doors to same-sex couples, campaigned as husbands for the presidency, entered the Cabinet as a family, and raised children beneath the scrutiny placed upon prominent LGBTQ+ parents.
Their lives also demonstrate that legal equality and lived equality are not the same. A marriage license could recognize their union, but it could not prevent homophobic attacks, political calculation, threats, or the private fear each man carried from the years before they met.
Love did not remove those obstacles. It gave them someone with whom to face them.
Still In Love
Pete and Chasten began as two Midwestern men who had learned different versions of the same fear. Pete feared that acknowledging love might endanger the future he had built, while Chasten feared that revealing himself might cost him home and belonging.
Their first date offered each man an answer. Beside the river, Pete learned that taking another man’s hand could feel more powerful than any accomplishment he had known. Chasten learned that the man holding it would not step away when the public looked at them.
The promises grew from there. An airport gate became the place where a dating profile turned into a proposal. A cathedral that had once prohibited same-sex weddings became the place where they exchanged vows. A campaign stage became the place where one husband told the country that loving the other had helped him believe in himself again.
Their relationship has endured ambition, long separations, public attack, political defeat, career transformation, adoption heartbreak, sleepless parenthood, and the terror of a critically ill child. None of those experiences made their marriage historically important by itself, but together they show what public debates about LGBTQ+ equality look like inside an actual human life.
Marriage equality gave Pete and Chasten the right to become husbands. Love required them to become partners.
History will continue debating Pete Buttigieg’s politics, ambitions, accomplishments, and future. That is appropriate for any person who seeks national power.
Behind those debates remains a simpler truth. A man who once believed he could delay love met a man who once doubted he deserved a secure place in the world. They held hands, refused to hide, and built a family together.
The law made their marriage possible. Their love made it a life.

I grew up in South Bend. I have been active as, a stakeholder of proprty and projects here. Pete and i both moved back to South Bend in the early part of 2012. We met with in a mater of months. He was not dating Chasten yet. In 2016 i talked with him about a comprehensive business plan i had written for a historical building here. I had been to Pete and Chasten’s homd several times. He is a person of his word.. he cares deeply about humanity and th we environment and is extremely intelligent. He is very down to earth when talking with him. They are beautiful people, inside and out.
