What began between America’s great poet and a young workingman became one of the deepest relationships of Walt Whitman’s life, preserved in letters filled with longing, tenderness, fear, and the stubborn hope of being together again.

When Walt Whitman stepped aboard Peter Doyle’s streetcar on a stormy night in Washington, D.C., in 1865, the Civil War had only recently ended. The country was mourning its dead, struggling with emancipation and reunion, and attempting to imagine a future after four years of extraordinary violence.

Whitman was forty-six, a poet, journalist, former teacher, and devoted volunteer in the military hospitals of Washington. His visits with wounded and dying soldiers had changed him, deepening both his compassion and his understanding of the love that could exist between men.

Doyle was approximately twenty-two, an Irish immigrant, former Confederate soldier, and streetcar conductor. He had survived the war from the opposite side of the conflict, witnessed Abraham Lincoln’s assassination at Ford’s Theatre, and was now making his living among the ordinary workers of the capital.

They differed in age, education, profession, politics, and wartime allegiance. Yet something passed between them before either man had time to explain it.

Doyle later remembered Whitman wrapped in his blanket and looking like an old sea captain. Whitman was the only passenger, so Doyle entered the car and began talking with him. They felt comfortable with one another almost immediately, and when the streetcar reached the end of the line, Whitman remained aboard for the return journey.

Doyle recalled placing his hand on Whitman’s knee and feeling that they understood one another. From that night forward, they became nearly inseparable.

Across forty-three years of poetry, travel, separation, sexual freedom, addiction, illness, and change, Allen Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky kept finding their way back to the bond they had created.

When Allen Ginsberg first saw Peter Orlovsky in a painting in San Francisco in December 1954, he did not yet know that the young man staring back at him would become the central love of his life. He saw a beautiful face painted by the artist Robert LaVigne, but what followed would become far more complicated than beauty.

Ginsberg was twenty-eight, a still largely unknown poet searching for a way to live honestly in postwar America. Orlovsky was twenty-one, the son of Russian immigrants, raised in poverty and carrying responsibilities for a family shadowed by mental illness. He had left high school to help support them, worked as an orderly at a psychiatric hospital, and served in the Army before being discharged after speaking openly about his opposition to military life.

They met soon after Ginsberg saw the portrait and became lovers almost immediately. Within months, they exchanged private vows and began calling their relationship a marriage.

No court recognized those vows. No license protected their home, no legal structure defined their obligations, and no public ceremony announced what they had promised one another. Yet the life they created would endure in changing forms until Ginsberg’s death in 1997.

Their love was intimate, unconventional, open, frequently turbulent, and unmistakably real.

He was a celebrated Irish writer, an unmistakable presence in London society, and a married father of two whose wit had made him both admired and dangerous in the tightly controlled world of Victorian England.

Douglas, known throughout his life as Bosie, was twenty-one, sixteen years younger than Wilde, and the strikingly handsome son of the Marquess of Queensberry. He was an Oxford undergraduate, an aspiring poet, and a young man already engaged in a ferocious struggle with his domineering father.

Their relationship would become one of the most famous and consequential love affairs in literary history. It gave Wilde companionship, inspiration, beauty, and moments of extraordinary happiness, but it also became entangled with recklessness, jealousy, money, family warfare, and a legal system waiting for the opportunity to destroy men like them.

This is not a simple story of two lovers separated by a cruel society. The society was cruel, but their relationship was also volatile, unequal, and frequently destructive. To tell their story honestly requires holding both truths at once.

They loved each other, and their love helped lead them toward catastrophe.

Cage challenged the very definition of music, finding possibility in silence, accident, environmental sound, and chance. Cunningham liberated dance from the expectation that movement must illustrate music, allowing choreography and sound to exist independently while sharing the same time and space.

Long before the art world understood what they were creating, however, they were two men attempting to understand what was happening between them.

Their relationship began in an America where love between men could not be safely or openly lived. Cage was married when their feelings emerged, Cunningham was still finding his artistic identity, and neither man could know whether their connection would survive the emotional turmoil surrounding its beginning.

The thirty-nine letters collected in Love, Icebox: Letters from John Cage to Merce Cunningham preserve that uncertain period between 1942 and 1946. They do not present Cage as the serene philosopher of chance he would later become. They reveal a man overtaken by desire, frightened by separation, confused by the changes occurring within him, and desperate to know whether the person he loved felt the same.

Britten became one of the era’s great composers, while Pears became the tenor whose unmistakable voice inspired many of his finest works. Audiences saw them perform together, travel together, establish the Aldeburgh Festival together, and share a home on the Suffolk coast.

What the public was not permitted to say openly was that they were also in love.

Their relationship began in a Britain where intimacy between men could lead to arrest, imprisonment, public humiliation, and the destruction of a career. Britten and Pears lived together from 1939 until Britten’s death in 1976, yet their love was legally recognized during none of those years. Even after private homosexual acts between men were partially decriminalized in England and Wales in 1967, there was no marriage equality, no legal protection for their partnership, and no guarantee that greater honesty would be met with acceptance.

The world celebrated the music they made together while refusing to acknowledge the love that made so much of it possible.

Isherwood was forty-eight, an established English novelist whose Berlin stories would later help inspire Cabaret. Bachardy was eighteen, a first-year UCLA student who had not yet discovered the artist he would become.

They were separated by thirty years, two countries, vastly different levels of experience, and a society that regarded love between men as something shameful, dangerous, or criminal. Yet within a year, they were living together in Santa Monica, beginning a partnership that would endure until Isherwood’s death in 1986.

Their story was not remarkable because it was perfect. It was remarkable because it survived the forces outside their home and the storms that sometimes erupted within it.
